Kara Lange
Vice President of Business Development
As the Vice President of Business Development at GCommerce Solutions, my career has been shaped by a diverse background in advertising, SaaS, AdTech, and TravelTech at companies such as TravelPort, Arrivalist, Raycom Media, and AdRoll. My transition into leadership stemmed from my strengths in creating efficiencies, organizational skills, effective sales coaching, mentorship, and revenue attainment—all of which were recognized as I moved from an individual sales contributor role to leading teams.
These skills ultimately positioned me for my role at GCommerce, where I now focus on elevating the sales organization through process refinement, coaching, and leveraging my industry experience to build partnerships with independent boutique and luxury hotels.
What are some challenges you believe are unique to women in leadership roles within the digital marketing industry?
One of the most significant challenges I have faced as a woman in leadership is the pressure to take on every task myself and never say no. Early in my career, I felt that delegating meant I wasn’t handling everything I should be. However, a pivotal growth moment for me was realizing that delegation is not a failure, but a way to empower my team. By trusting my team and giving them opportunities to grow, I’ve learned that leadership is about guiding and nurturing others, not just shouldering everything independently. I still struggle with the mindset that, as a leader, I should be able to take on everything myself and that asking for help is a sign of failure. But I’ve come to realize that relying on my team not only prevents burnout but also creates valuable opportunities for collaboration and their growth.
Can you share strategies or personal experiences that have helped you overcome these challenges and thrive in your leadership role?
One of my key strategies has been identifying strong team members and understanding their growth aspirations. By aligning projects with their interests, I create win-win situations where my team thrives while achieving business objectives.
Additionally, I had a boss in a previous role who set an incredible example by emphasizing work-life balance and ensuring that work didn’t consume our personal lives. He encouraged a culture where we could disconnect at the end of the day, reducing burnout and increasing productivity. That leadership style has shaped the way I approach my role today—I want my team to feel supported and know that success doesn’t come from overextending oneself but from working smarter and supporting each other.
What are some of the most significant achievements and milestones you've reached at GCommerce Solutions?
Looking back on my career, I take immense pride in my consistent success in driving revenue, closing record-setting deals, and leading teams to new heights. Beyond the numbers, one of my most fulfilling achievements has been mentoring and coaching team members who have grown under my leadership. Knowing that I’ve helped someone develop skills, build confidence, and advance in their career is incredibly rewarding.
Sales also teaches resilience—learning how to handle setbacks and staying motivated even during difficult times. That resilience has been crucial in my leadership journey. Since joining GCommerce in December, I’ve hit the ground running to refine processes, coach the team, and build a stronger foundation for long-term success. I’m excited to see how my efforts will contribute to the company’s future growth.
What practical advice would you offer to women who aspire to take on leadership roles in digital marketing?
Transitioning from an individual contributor to a leadership role can be challenging, but my biggest advice is to seek out opportunities beyond your core responsibilities. Volunteer for projects, take initiative in cross-functional collaboration and develop a strategic mindset beyond your day-to-day role.
Finding a mentor is also invaluable—whether it’s your boss or another senior leader, learning from someone who has navigated leadership can provide critical insights. Most importantly, leadership isn’t just about excelling in your role; it’s about understanding the bigger picture and contributing to the overall success of the organization.
How do you perceive the role of diversity and inclusion in fostering innovation and driving success within your organization and the industry?
The digital marketing industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, making diverse perspectives and fresh ideas more crucial than ever. However, I’ve noticed that many companies tend to hire based on direct industry experience rather than focusing on transferable skills and strengths. This cautious hiring approach limits innovation and diversity of thought.
Bringing in people with different backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints fosters creativity and drives business success. Companies that embrace diversity and inclusion are better positioned to adapt, grow, and innovate.
